Author Spotlight: Betty Culley
Dec. 27, 2019
We are pleased to feature author Betty Culley and her debut young adult novel, THREE THINGS I KNOW ARE TRUE (HarperCollins, Jan. 7, 2020). Enter to win a copy!
I was always a big reader. As a child I would read by the light of the moon. I wrote my first book when I was ten, but I wrote it in pencil and it faded! My deepest emotions always seem to find their expression in a teen voice.
Congrats on forthcoming YA verse novel, THREE THINGS I KNOW ARE TRUE. Tell us about this story and what inspired it.
I’m an RN who worked as a pediatric hospice nurse and I was inspired by both the children and families I worked with.
How did you decide to write this novel in verse instead of prose?
A writing friend suggested I try it in verse and I’m so glad she did!
Was your road to publication long and winding, short and sweet, or something in between?
My road was both long and winding but also short. I can’t remember a time in my life when publication wasn’t a dream for me. This novel took about nine months to write and found a home right away.
What projects are you working on now?
I am working on another verse novel also set in a small town in Maine. And I have a prose middle grade novel coming out in 2021.
What advice would you give to aspiring verse novelists?
Read the many wonderful verse novels out there for inspiration. And just give it a try. You may be surprised, like I was, how perfect it is for your story.
What is one thing most people don't know about you?
When I was fifteen I was an exchange student and lived on a big farm in the south of Sweden for a year.
Where can people find you online?
My website is www.bettyculley.com
Betty Culley lives in central Maine, where the rivers run through the small towns. She’s an RN who worked as an obstetrics nurse and as a pediatric hospice nurse. THREE THINGS I KNOW ARE TRUE is her debut.
