Tell us about yourself and how you came to illustrate for children.
I am a graphic designer from Egypt, with a background in packaging and branding. During my career as a designer I noticed that drawing and illustrating was what I was most interested in. So I moved to LA to study art and animation and along that journey I discovered my style and started creating my own world of characters. Thats when i decided I wanted to share the stories of my characters with children through writing and illustration picture books.

Congrats on your banner design. How did you approach this project?
For this project, I drew inspiration from Kidlit's original banner design with birds and the trees but I wanted to be more inclusive of different types of animals, since reading is for everyone.

What is your preferred medium and style for illustration?
Watercolor is one of my favorite mediums because I love the imperfect quality of it that compliments children's books so well. As someone who grew up on cartoon network, my style leans more cartoony with an emphasis on the eyes.

What projects are you working on now?
I am currently writing and illustrating my own book about my alien characters called bloops.

Rania Abouzeid is an Egyptian graphic designer, animator, athlete and exercise scientist with a wild imagination and an even wilder cast of characters. On her journey to discover her illustration style, she began creating quirky little creatures she calls the Bloops, and the more she created, the more she knew she wanted to share their world with children everywhere. She brings that same playful energy and signature style to every character she illustrates, whether they are aliens, children, or cute little animals, using watercolor, pastels, and digital media to bring them to life. Watercolor holds a special place in her heart because it's beautifully imperfect quality feels right at home in the world of children's books.
