- What: submit the first 125 words of a PB, MG, or YA MS and receive a green light to submit more, or a red light to go back and submit another. Winners in short & long works get a free critique and an opportunity to submit to Jen Rofé at Andrea Brown Literary agency.

Mar. 17 - Mar 31 Amtrak Writing Residency
- What: Apply for 24 free long distance round trip tickets on Amtrak for any writer who wants to write & be inspired by the countryside, with sleeping berth, desk and outlets. Note some concerns about giving Amtrak publication rights to application material.
June 15 SCBWI Tomie dePaola Illustration Contest Part 1
- What: winning illustration entry gets a free trip to the winter SCBWI conference in New York and lunch with Tomie de Paola. Note this year's competition is a two-part competition.
