Sept. 13 7 p.m. CST An In Depth Dive into Commissioned Work: with award-winning author Gwendolyn Hooks  Gwendolyn will share how she began writing on commission, the writing process, and how to keep editors asking for more. Gwendolyn Hooks is an award-winning author of over 20 books for children many of which are commissioned works. 

Sept. 16-Nov. 22   Deep Feedback Workshop with Sangeeta Mehta A unique opportunity: Submit the equivalent of 60 pages of your MG or YA novel for deep analysis and feedback from Sangeeta Mehta, former acquiring editor at Little, Brown and Simon Pulse and current consultant. Workshop capped at four writers. Writers will critique one another's work at multiple levels and receive both writing and editorial guidance from Sangeeta.  


Oct. 3 8:30 p.m.-9:45 p.m. EST Lost in Pace: Making Sure Your Picture Book Doesn't Go Off the Rails (affiliate link). Agent Sean McCarthy will explore how to entice a young reader from opening to final page. He will focus on how a book's high level mechanics-- like character development and transformation, plotting, and structure-- can be used to keep your book on track.




Lerner Books has an open call for nonfiction writers from underrepresented or marginalized backgrounds interested in doing work-for-hire. Deadline is Sept. 30, 2019.

  1. I spot-checked the info about the publishers that accept unsolicited MSS and found several errors, including links to submission guidelines that don't work. In addition, the Arthur A. Levine imprint at Scholastic is no longer active. Versify is the only imprint at Houghton that's open, and yes, you should submit to Versify via their email, not via snail mail as stated in the blog post. Always double check the publisher's listed guidelines.
